What Successful People Do For Their Mental Health

I’ll be honest. When I think of successful people, I don’t usually think about mental health. I think about money, achievements, status.

But I watched something that changed my perspective. Richard Wilson from the Family Office Club shared something personal. A member of their community had passed away by suicide. And Wilson used that as a reason to talk about mental health.

It was a powerful moment. Because it reminded us that success means nothing if you’re not okay mentally.

Success Isn’t Everything

Here’s the truth. You can have all the money in the world. You can have all the achievements. But if you’re not okay mentally, none of that matters.

Wilson talked about how his community focuses on emotional health. They prioritize it above financial success. Because what’s the point of building wealth if you’re too stressed to enjoy it?

This hit home for me. I’ve been guilty of pushing through, ignoring how I feel, grinding until I burn out. I thought that was the price of success.

But it’s not. That’s just an excuse we tell ourselves.

The Most Fun Year

Wilson has this concept he calls “the most fun year.” Every year, he tries to make it his best year yet.

Not the most productive. Not the most profitable. The most fun. The most fulfilling.

That’s an interesting way to think about it. What would it actually mean for this year to be your best year? Not just in terms of achievements, but in terms of how you feel?

Think about that for a second. What would your life look like if your goal was to have the most fun year possible? How would you act differently?

What Successful People Actually Do

So what do mentally healthy successful people do? Here are some things Wilson mentioned:

They Pursue Exciting Ideas

Boredom is dangerous. When we’re bored, we get stuck. We ruminate. We focus on problems.

Successful people combat this by pursuing exciting ideas. They have projects that energize them. Things that make them curious. Things that make them want to wake up in the morning.

If you’re bored with your life, that’s a warning sign. Find something that excites you.

They Set Goals

Goals give us direction. They give us something to work toward. They make us feel like we’re progressing. The simple framework that helps you achieve anything can be a great starting point.

Successful people always have goals. Not just for work, but for life. They’re always working toward something.

What are you working toward? If you don’t have a clear answer, that’s something to think about.

They Visualize

Here’s something that might seem woo-woo but is actually practical. Successful people visualize their goals.

They see themselves achieving. They imagine what it will feel like. They picture the details. But there’s a right and wrong way to do this — I explored why in why just thinking positively actually makes you less motivated.

This isn’t just positive thinking. It helps prepare your brain for success. It makes the goal feel real. It increases motivation.

They Keep Learning

Growth is important for mental health. When we stop growing, we stagnate. We feel stuck.

Successful people never stop learning. They’re always reading, asking questions, seeking new information. This is one of the reasons reading books can actually change your life.

This keeps their minds sharp. It gives them new perspectives. It helps them adapt to change.

They Focus On What They Can Control

Here’s a big one. We stress about things we can’t control. Politics, other people, the economy, the past.

Successful people focus on what they can control. Their own actions. Their own choices. Their own mindset. This is Stoicism in practice — the same wisdom Marcus Aurelius wrote about in stop wanting, start accepting.

This reduces stress enormously. You can’t eliminate stress entirely. But you can stop stressing about things outside your influence.

The Bottom Line

Here’s what I want you to take away. Your mental health matters more than your achievements. More than your money. More than your status.

If you’re not okay mentally, nothing else is worth it. And if you are okay mentally, you can handle whatever comes your way.

Take care of yourself. Prioritize your mental health. Make this your most fun year yet.


Success without peace isn’t success.
