I used to think of myself as a small thing inside a big universe. A person in a body, moving through a world that was mostly not me. Alan Watts would say that picture is backwards. You are not in the universe. The universe is organized as a person.

This is the idea behind “you are the big bang.” Not a metaphor. A description. The same energy that exploded into stars and planets is now reading these words. Only the form is different. The atoms in your hand were forged in the same explosion that created the sun. The calcium in your bones came from ancient stars. You are not a visitor here. You are the place itself, temporarily arranged into a shape that can think about itself.

The whirlpool

Watts liked to use the image of a whirlpool in a river. The water is always moving. New water rushes in from upstream. Old water rushes out downstream. The whirlpool itself is just a pattern. It has a shape. It also has a center. But it is not a separate thing. It is the river, temporarily organized in a certain way.

You are like that. Your body is not a static object. Every cell is replacing itself. The food you ate last week is now your skin. The air you breathed five minutes ago is now your blood. You are a pattern in the flow of energy, not a fixed entity standing apart from it.

This matters because most suffering comes from the feeling of separation. We feel like we are alone in here, looking out at a world that is not us. But the boundary is a convenience, not a fact. Your skin is not a wall. It is a surface of exchange. You breathe in the world and breathe yourself out. You also eat the world and excrete yourself out. There is no hard line.

When you feel anxious or lonely, that feeling is partly the result of imagining yourself as a separate fragment. You are trying to solve a problem that exists only in the map, not in the territory. The territory is one flowing process. The map draws a circle around a part of it and calls it “you.” That circle is useful for practical purposes. It is not the truth.

Leaning sticks

Watts also used the image of two sticks leaning against each other. Remove one and the other falls. Neither stands on its own. Everything in the universe is like this. Nothing exists independently.

Your body depends on the sun for warmth. The sun depends on the galaxy for its position. That galaxy depends on the expanding universe. Pull any thread and the whole tapestry unravels. This is not poetry. It is physics.

The relationship between organism and environment is not a relationship between two separate things. It is a single process. The environment grows the organism. In turn, the organism changes the environment. You cannot say where one ends and the other begins. The boundary is a line drawn for convenience, like the border between two countries. On the ground, there is no line. Just a gradual shift from one place to another.

This is what Watts meant when he said you did not come into the world. You came out of it. Like a wave coming out of the ocean. The wave is not separate from the ocean. It is the ocean, moving in a certain way for a while. When the wave returns, it does not die. It goes back to being ocean.

The same applies to your thoughts. They are not separate from your brain. Your brain is not separate from the food you eat. The food is not separate from the soil. That soil is not separate from the stars. Everything is leaning on everything else. When you see this, the feeling of being a lonely self in a hostile universe starts to look like a mistake in perspective.

The involuntary self

Here is a practical way to test this. Most people define themselves by what they can control. Their thoughts. Their choices. Their actions. But what about the things you cannot control?

Your heart beats without your permission. You do not tell it when to speed up or slow down. You also do not decide to digest your breakfast. Your lungs breathe while you sleep. These are not things happening to you. They are you. These processes are as much a part of your identity as your thoughts or your name.

Try this exercise. For one minute, define yourself as everything that is involuntary. Heartbeat. Breathing. Digestion in your gut. Cells repairing themselves. Neurons firing without your conscious input.

When you include these, the self gets much bigger. It is no longer a small pilot in a machine. It is the whole living process. You are not the person thinking thoughts. You are the body thinking thoughts. And the body is not separate from the air it breathes or the food it eats.

This is not abstract. It changes how you feel when you are anxious. The anxiety is not an intruder. It is a signal from the system. You are not fighting it. Instead, you are listening to it. The separation between “me” and “my anxiety” starts to dissolve.

I tried this last month during a stressful week. Instead of thinking “I am anxious,” I thought “this body is anxious.” The shift was small but real. The anxiety was still there. But it was no longer mine in the same way. It was just weather moving through a larger system. That made it easier to wait it out.

What this changes

If you are not separate from the universe, then other people are not separate from you either. They are other patterns in the same flow. This does not mean you merge with everyone and lose your boundaries. It means the boundaries are porous. Their pain is your pain. Their relief is your relief.

This is why the prodigal son story resonates. The feeling of being cut off from nature is not a personal failure. It is the human condition. And the return is not going back to a previous state. It is coming to yourself in full consciousness.

It also connects to the dependent origination idea. Nothing exists on its own. Everything depends on everything else. When you see this clearly, you stop trying to grab life by the parts you like and discard the parts you do not. Instead, you start seeing the whole.

The happiness as relationship with the whole idea follows from this. You cannot dissect life and keep the good parts. The good parts only exist because of the whole. Pleasure exists because of pain. Joy exists because of sorrow.

And if life and death are complementary, then your existence is not a battle against non-existence. It is a dance with it. You came out of the universe. You will go back. The pattern will dissolve. But the energy remains. It always has.

When you realize you are the big bang, problems look different. They are not external obstacles blocking your path. They are the universe bumping into itself. Other people are not opponents. They are you, arranged differently. Conflict is not me against you. It is the whole process working through a tension that needs resolution.

This does not make you passive. It makes you more engaged. You stop fighting reality and start working with it. The frustration of traffic is not the car in front of you. It is the universe moving slowly. The argument with your partner is not a battle to win. It is two patterns trying to find a new arrangement.

Does this mean I do not have free will? It means free will is not what you thought it was. You are not a separate agent making choices in isolation. Instead, you are the whole universe making choices through a particular form. That does not mean choices are illusions. It means they are bigger than you think.

How do I stop feeling separate? You do not stop it. You notice it. The feeling of separation is itself a pattern in the system. When you see it clearly, it loses its grip. Walking outside. Touching trees. Breathing air. These remind the body what the mind forgets.

Is this just philosophy? It is philosophy. But it is also physics. And it is also psychology. The feeling of separation causes anxiety, depression, and conflict. When that feeling softens, those things soften too. You do not have to believe anything. Just test it. Expand your definition of self for one minute and see what happens.

What if I feel small? You are small. And you are also the biggest thing there is. The wave is small. The ocean is not. You are both. The feeling of smallness comes from identifying only with the wave. When you include the ocean, the smallness does not go away. It becomes part of something larger.


The universe is not a place you live in. It is what you are. The big bang is still happening. It is happening as you.
